Cairo: Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat reviewed on Monday, September 14, 2026, with Nexus Analytica CEO Wissam El-Baz the latest work on developing regulatory frameworks and rules for managing Egypt's electricity market and promoting governance and transparency. The meeting, held at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, also covered the company's expertise and digital technologies in energy planning, power purchase agreements, energy data analysis, renewable power plant performance, and energy-efficiency monitoring.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the two sides discussed the next phase of a plan to gradually liberalize the electricity market, with the aim of developing an integrated framework that complies with Egypt's existing legislation while reflecting international energy market developments and safeguarding energy security and supply stability. Esmat emphasized that market regulation should create a competitive environment, improve operational efficiency, ensure financial sustainability, and attract further investment. He noted that service quality and operational efficiency remain key priorities as the ministry separates electricity generation, transmission, and distribution activities.
He further explained that the Electricity Law provides a framework for greater private-sector participation and strengthens the role of regulatory bodies in monitoring compliance and enforcing standards, while promoting fair competition, transparency, and financial sustainability. The meeting also reviewed international models and best practices for electricity market liberalization, including a gradual approach that would expand bilateral contracting between eligible market participants before moving toward a more competitive market based on clear and transparent rules.
Nexus Analytica representatives outlined the methodology for the ongoing study, including an assessment of the current market, readiness analysis, the proposed market structure and operating mechanisms, and the regulatory, institutional, and technical requirements for each stage.
