Egypt Reaffirms Peaceful Nuclear Rights, Safety Standards at IAEA Conference

Vienna: Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat stated on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, that peaceful nuclear energy is an inherent right of all states under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, emphasizing that Egypt's nuclear program adheres to the highest safety and security standards.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Esmat addressed the IAEA General Conference, expressing Egypt's support for nuclear technology development and the safe deployment of small modular and advanced reactors. He highlighted significant progress at the El Dabaa nuclear power plant, noting the installation of reactor pressure vessels for the first two units and ongoing work on all four units.

Esmat also voiced opposition to efforts that link accession to the voluntary Additional Protocol with peaceful nuclear cooperation. He advocated for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and condemned attacks on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, labeling them as violations of international law.
