Egypt Maintains Leadership in Africa’s Fixed Internet Speed for Fifth Year

Vienna:Egypt has retained its position as Africa's leader in fixed broadband speed for the fifth consecutive year, recognized by the Speedtest Award from global internet performance measurement company Ookla for the first half of 2026.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the award was announced during Network X 2026, held in Vienna, Austria, from October 13 to 15. Egyptian fixed broadband networks outperformed those in other African countries, highlighting the nation's ongoing efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure and telecommunications efficiency.

The award is based on actual fixed broadband performance measurements from the Speedtest platform, assessing network speed and efficiency through real-world usage data. This achievement underscores Egypt's commitment to improving internet service quality, meeting the increasing demand for telecommunications and data services, and supporting digital transformation goals.

The Egyptian delegation, led by Mohamed Shamroukh, Chief Executive of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), received the award on behalf of Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi. The delegation included key figures such as Mohamed El-Fouy, Hossam Abdel Mawla, and Ahmed Shawky Abdel Ghafar.

Shamroukh highlighted that this international recognition would encourage further network development and inspire telecommunications service providers to invest more in infrastructure. This investment aims to deliver higher-quality services and keep up with rapid technological advancements. He also praised Ookla's role in providing objective network performance indicators that motivate countries to improve their telecommunications services.

He affirmed that the NTRA would continue implementing regulatory and technical measures to enhance service quality and bolster Egypt's regional and international standing in telecommunications and information technology.
