Egypt Launches Digital Environmental Impact Assessment System

Cairo:Egypt has launched a new digital Environmental Impact Assessment system aimed at streamlining the application process for environmental approvals by ending paper-based submissions. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, marks a significant step toward digital transformation in the sector.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the launch of the digital system, known as IDEIA, addresses concerns from investors regarding the lengthy procedures and difficulties in tracking applications. The system became operational on November 1, 2026, and is designed to ensure that all applications and related procedures are completed electronically.

The ministry, led by Awad, has prioritized this digital transition following consultations with investors to understand the challenges they face. These consultations revealed issues such as unresolved applications, lack of communication, and the inability of investors to track their application status. The new system aims to facilitate better communication and transparency, allowing investors to track their applications electronically and accelerating the approval process.

Awad emphasized the critical role of media in educating investors about the new system and its usage. She mentioned that explanatory materials would be provided to guide investors in accessing the system, submitting documents, and tracking their applications. The minister also confirmed that all environmental impact assessments must now be submitted digitally, which will standardize procedures and assist in efficient processing.

The introduction of this system is viewed as a pivotal move towards modernizing government operations, simplifying processes for investors, and bolstering green investment while ensuring adherence to environmental standards.
