According to State Information Service Egypt, the Prime Minister's remarks were made during a meeting held on October 5, 2026, at the government headquarters in the New Capital. The meeting included officials from 'Acwa' to review the latest developments in their cooperation on seawater desalination projects.
Attendees at the meeting included Samir Sarhan, Acwa's Executive Director; Hashem Ghabashi, Acwa's Regional President for the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia; Ahmed Omran, Deputy Minister of Housing for Utilities; Hassan Amin, Acwa's CEO and Regional Managing Director in Egypt; and Assem Shokr, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater.
Madbouly welcomed Acwa's officials and reiterated the ongoing collaboration with the company on desalination projects, acknowledging Acwa's extensive experience in this sector. He mentioned the goal of securing competitive offers from companies interested in these projects, targeting a desalinated water production capacity of 10 million cubic meters per day. The state plans to achieve this through modern plants utilizing the latest global technologies, in partnership with major specialized companies.
Samir Sarhan, Executive Director of Acwa, expressed the company's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Egypt, citing Acwa's significant investments in Egyptian renewable energy projects. He reviewed several of these projects and acknowledged the strong partnership with Egypt in executing desalination projects to boost the country's production capacity.
The meeting underscored the importance of desalination projects as part of Egypt's strategy to promote sustainable urban development, expand new city establishments, and develop coastal regions. These projects are seen as sustainable solutions to meet water resource needs for development.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the investment opportunities available in the desalination sector, aligning with Egypt's efforts to increase private-sector involvement and leverage its expertise while supporting the localization of related industries.
