Egypt Emphasizes Private Sector’s Role in Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Development

Cairo:Egypt's Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, emphasized the pivotal role of the private sector in advancing the country's healthcare system. He highlighted the significance of localizing pharmaceutical and vaccine production, which currently satisfies over 91% of the domestic market demand. His remarks were made during a high-level roundtable arranged by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, attended by leading figures from the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, along with representatives from major international and local companies.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdel Ghaffar detailed the primary components of Egypt's national healthcare strategy, focusing on efforts to ensure all citizens have equitable access to quality medical services. This includes a strategic shift from reactive curative care to proactive preventive healthcare, supported by expanded screening and early-detection initiatives. He also acknowledged President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's backing in reducing hepatitis C infection rates, which has led to international recognition for Egypt's efforts to eliminate the disease.

The minister discussed the Universal Health Insurance System and the new legislation that facilitates private-sector investment in healthcare infrastructure. These measures aim to provide a secure and stable legislative environment for investors. Abdel Ghaffar also noted the ministry's push towards digital transformation, automating administrative processes for licensing medical facilities and registering pharmaceutical products in collaboration with the Egyptian Drug Authority.

Additionally, he highlighted the government's commitment to creating a transparent investment climate by enhancing predictability and regulatory stability, simplifying administrative procedures, and integrating advanced technologies and modern treatment methods into the Egyptian market. These efforts are intended to foster innovation and attract investment.

Abdel Ghaffar reaffirmed the resilience of Egypt's healthcare system in the face of regional challenges and crises. He reiterated the government's dedication to removing barriers for domestic and international investors, solidifying Egypt's status as a leading regional hub for healthcare and medical tourism.
