Cairo:Egypt has voiced its strong disapproval of the Libyan House of Representatives' decision to ratify a 2019 memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Turkey concerning the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction in the Mediterranean.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates issued a statement declaring the MoU as null and void, asserting that it holds no legal effect. The Egyptian government stated that the Libyan parliament's ratification does not alter Egypt's position or create any legal implications for the nation.
The statement further argued that the MoU contravenes international maritime law principles and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982, which governs the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf on the basis of equity and fairness.
Additionally, Egypt emphasized that the MoU represents a direct violation of its sovereign rights within its EEZ and continental shelf. The statement also recalled Egypt's previous formal objection to the agreement.
