Cairo: Egypt will witness the early stages of a deep partial lunar eclipse before sunrise on Friday, Aug. 28, the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) said.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the eclipse is the second and final lunar eclipse of 2026 and will coincide with the full moon of Rabi' al-Awwal 1448. The penumbral phase is set to begin at 4:24 a.m. Cairo time, followed by the visible partial eclipse at 5:34 a.m.
The eclipse will reach its maximum observable stage from Egypt at 6:29 a.m., coinciding with sunrise in Cairo, which will limit visibility from the capital as daylight emerges. However, the eclipse will continue globally for several hours.
Approximately 93% of the Moon's surface will be covered by Earth's shadow as viewed from Egypt, while the full phenomenon will last around five hours and 38 minutes. Globally, more than 96% of the Moon's disk will enter the darkest part of Earth's shadow at the eclipse's peak.
The eclipse will be safe to observe with the naked eye, unlike a solar eclipse, which requires eye protection.
