Cairo Warns Ethiopia Over Plans for More Nile Dams

Cairo: Egypt will not accept or allow any party to control the flow of Nile water to downstream countries, an Egyptian source said on Sunday. This response comes after recent remarks by Ethiopia's water and energy minister regarding plans to build additional dams on the river.

According to TRTworld.com, the unidentified source, in remarks carried by Egypt's official news agency MENA, stated that the comments attributed to Ethiopian Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Itefa about constructing more dams on the Nile and managing water flows to Egypt and Sudan demonstrate Ethiopia's unilateral approach and a violation of international law.

The source further noted that these remarks reflect Addis Ababa's continued belief that it can impose control over a shared international river, subjecting it to the will of a single nation. The Egyptian state reportedly possesses multiple and wide-ranging tools to defend the interests of its people concerning the Nile, though specifics were not provided.

The source reiterated that Egypt will not tolerate any attempts by any party to control the water flows to the downstream countries of Egypt and Sudan.
