Cairo: ABB Egypt has signed two contracts with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to supply and install UniGear ZS1 medium-voltage switchgear at several power stations in Cairo, with a combined value exceeding EGP 200 million (approximately 4 million USD). The contracts were signed by EETC Chairperson Mona Rizk and ABB Egypt Chairman Ahmed Hammad.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the partnership comes as Egypt expands efforts to modernize electricity transmission and distribution networks. This initiative aligns with the country's rapid urban and industrial growth and prepares the grid to integrate more renewable energy sources. "Over the past 100 years, ABB has established itself as a reliable strategic partner in power technology across various sectors in Egypt," Hammad remarked.
With Cairo's continued economic growth and urban expansion, the demand for a technologically advanced and robust electricity transmission and distribution network is increasing. ABB remains committed to the local market by leveraging its global expertise to support Egypt's transition towards a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
EETC Chairperson Rizk emphasized that the partnership reflects EETC's commitment to continuously developing and modernizing the national electricity transmission network. "Advanced medium-voltage switchgear such as UniGear ZS1 is essential to strengthening grid stability and operational efficiency while supporting urban and industrial expansion and localizing the production of grid components," she said.
The UniGear ZS1 switchgear supplied to several Cairo power stations is among ABB's latest solutions, designed to provide high levels of flexibility, operational efficiency, and safety, and operate reliably under all conditions. Abdellah Kassem, ELDS Egypt Distribution Solutions Business Manager - Commercial and Operations at ABB, noted that the project will help EETC strengthen the grid, improve operational efficiency, and prepare the infrastructure to integrate renewable energy.
The switchgear combines advanced engineering, digital technologies, and sustainability solutions. Kassem added that the units will be assembled and manufactured at ABB's factory in Egypt. UniGear ZS1 represents the latest generation of switchgear that ABB has supplied to the Egyptian market over its 25-year history in the sector.
These contracts add to ABB's 100-year presence in Egypt, with the company having participated in major national projects, including the Grand Egyptian Museum, projects in the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City, as well as private real estate developments and projects across the agriculture, infrastructure, and industrial sectors.
