Workshop to equip media professionals with statistical indicators expertise kicks off

The Higher Population Council (HPC), in collaboration with the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation (JRTV) with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), recently organized a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the media professionals’ comprehension and utilization of statistical indicators in their work. The workshop, titled “Using Statistical Indicators in Media,” brought together a number of media experts working in the JRTV. In a statement on Tuesday, HPC Secretary-General Issa Massarweh said the workshop is a component of the Council’s ongoing initiatives to improve the skills of media professionals and promote the use of reliable data in their reporting. He delivered a briefing on local data sources for statistical indicators, their uses and variations, and the composite statistical indicators, a class of indicators that has grown in recent years and is generated by international organizations. JRTV Director-General Ibrahim Bawareed highlighted the Council’s role in advancing the knowledge of media professionals in a variety of fields related to population and development issues, particularly the statistical indicators that are critical to media work in all of its forms. This helps spread media content backed by digital indicators, which in turn helps community members become more aware of important demographic concerns and win the support of decision-makers. Rania Abbadi, assistant secretary-general of the HPC, presented a description of the definition of the indicators of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals as well as the 16 statistical indicators that make up the Economic Modernization Vision (2023-2033).
