Withdrawal of 17 candidates from parliamentary elections reduces final local lists to 172

Amman: The deadline for submitting withdrawal applications for candidates on local lists running in the 2024 parliamentary elections has ended, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced on Monday.

17 candidates decided to withdraw from the elections, and the final lists of candidates for local districts will be revealed on Wednesday, the IEC said in a statement.

The IEC reported that withdrawing candidates from two lists reduced the number of final local candidate lists to 172. Accordingly, the total number of candidates within these lists amounted to 937, including 747 males and 190 females.

Paragraph (a) of Article 17 of the electoral law stipulates that “any local list or any candidate within it may withdraw candidacy by submitting a written request to the election chief in that district 15 days before the day set for voting,” while paragraph (c) of the same article stipulates that “no candidate within the party list may withdraw his candidacy.”

The IEC Board of Commissioners decided to canc
el a candidate’s application in one of the local constituencies after receiving a written complaint supported by documents demonstrating that he failed to meet one of the candidacy requirements after accepting candidacy applications.
