WHO condemns Israel’s attacks on healthcare in Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) has condemned the relentless Israeli bombardments carried yesterday near Al-Shifa Hospital, Al-Quds Hospital, and the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. Outside Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical center in Gaza, ambulances were evacuating critically injured and sick patients to hospitals in the south of the Gaza Strip when Israeli warplanes carried out an attack at the entrance of the hospital. At least thirteen people were killed and more than 60 injured in the Israeli attack, which also resulted in damage to hospital infrastructure and at least one ambulance. This was in addition to an earlier Israeli shelling that had resulted in damage to another ambulance in the same convoy. Two further Israeli aerial attacks were also reported on the same day at Al-Quds Hospital, resulting in at least 21 injuries. An additional Israeli attack was reported near the Indonesian Hospital. “Attacks on health care, including the targeting of hospitals and restricting the delivery of essential aid such as medical supplies, fuel, and water, may amount to violations of International Humanitarian Law,” WHO said in a statement. WHO reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing the urgent need to protect all health workers, patients, health transport, and health facilities.
