Rohey John Manjang, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Gambia, has emphasised the Government of the Gambia’s openness to establishing more partnerships to support climate finance as part of efforts to combat climate change, as the country works on a new national framework that is scheduled to be finalised early next year.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) at Expo City Dubai, Manjang explained that the new national framework aims to facilitate contracts that ensure balance and flexibility, serving the interests of both countries in terms of carbon emission reduction.

The Gambian Minister added that the Gambia is updating most of its climate-related policies and regulations, such as updating the Scientists Law and the Biodiversity Law, which is currently under review.

She also pointed out that her country’s plan for 2024 is to work on climate change policy to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to shape the gov
ernment structure and procedures, taking into account the inclusion of the private sector, individuals and local communities in being active contributors to the process.

The Gambian Minister praised the UAE’s efforts to drive global climate action, including the establishment of the Global Climate Fund, launched by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the first day of COP28.

She also expressed her optimism about financing and the rapid response to ensure a just transition for all countries.
