Director General of the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Jumana Attiyat, inaugurated the Urban Thinkers Forum on Wednesday, under the theme “Thinking about the Future of Urban Areas, Sustainable Housing and Green Buildings.”

Over the next three days, the forum will address key topics such as housing, sustainable transportation, and green infrastructure, exploring innovative solutions to housing shortages, environmentally friendly transportation, and comprehensive urban development.

The forum, organized by the German Jordanian University in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Jordan and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), brings together key stakeholders to discuss sustainable urban development.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Maher Abu Saman, Attiyat highlighted the growing environmental challenges that underscore the urgency of embracing the concept of green cities.

She emphasized the importance of integrating rene
wable energy, smart transportation systems, vertical agriculture, and recycling in urban planning to foster environmentally sustainable cities and drive a shift in urban development practices.

Attiyat noted that Jordan has been at the forefront of adopting global urban planning standards, and efforts are underway to move beyond planning to design, ensuring modern, flexible, and environmentally friendly cities. These efforts align with His Majesty King Abdullah II’s Economic Modernization Vision, particularly the Quality of Life axis, which includes urban development initiatives aimed at enhancing governance in urban planning, developing smart transportation, promoting green spaces, and expanding green building standards.
