UNIFIL Deputy Spokesperson Kandice Ardiel said that ‘Earlier today, a contractor traveling to provide services to UNIFIL’s Spanish contingent was hit by gunfire near Sarda. Peacekeepers evacuated him to hospital.’
She added, ‘This is the second incident in as many days in which a contractor supporting our peacekeepers has been the victim of attack. Also yesterday, in the same area, gunfire from south of the location hit the ground near a passing Spanish patrol, causing ricocheting stones to hit the vehicle.’
‘Yet again we call the parties’ attention to the immense human cost of these exchanges of fire for civilians in south Lebanon, including those supporting the men and women working for peace. Attacks that harm civilians must stop. Attacks that directly or indirectly affect the ability of peacekeepers to perform their important work under resolution 1701 must stop. The violence that has plagued south Lebanon and northern Israel since 8 October must stop,’ stressed Ardiel.
