The UN has urged international donors to take action to bridge the financing gap in the humanitarian response plan in Yemen for the current year to avoid a “catastrophe.” According to the UN News, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, David Gresley, said Sunday on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day: “I call on donor countries to act urgently to fund the humanitarian response plan for Yemen for 2023, which suffers from a large gap of 70 per cent to prevent a catastrophe.” Gresley’s statement noted that relief agencies face a severe funding crisis that has endangered the humanitarian response. Although only four months remain until the end of the year, the humanitarian response plan is 30 per cent funded, with only $1.4 billion of the total $4.3 billion required to meet the needs in Syria and Yemen transferred to the response plan.
