The second Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Ministerial Conference on Environment and Climate Action kicked off here Monday.

Environment ministers are set to discuss common challenges and a future plan of action in light of threats posed by climate change in the region.

The conference will also probe a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was issued in August and warned that the Mediterranean region was the worst affected by climate change.

Hosted by Egypt, this second ministerial gathering is chaired by the European Commission and the Jordanian Ministry of Environment, with UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel and Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad taking part.

It represents an important opportunity to stress the urgency of addressing shared climate and environmental challenges and steer action toward a clean, competitive, resilient and inclusive Mediterranean for the health and well-being of all citizens in the region.

A final communique to that effect should be issued at the end of the conference.
