SHARJAH: The UAE Board on Book for Young People (UAEBBY) has announced the commencement of the “Creative Writing Competition,” inviting children and young people aged 6 to 18 in the UAE to participate until 31st July.

The competition aims to foster the creativity of young participants, refine their talents, and enhance their literary abilities and writing skills by encouraging them to create stories in Arabic.

Marwa Al Aqroubi, President of the UAEBBY, affirmed that this annual competition forms part of the “Read, Dream, Create” campaign organised by the Council. It is designed to discover and nurture the potential of children and young people in the realm of innovation and creativity, providing them with an avenue to articulate their thoughts and aspirations through the creation of innovative literary works. Furthermore, it seeks to bolster their engagement with writing and reading, as well as enrich their cognitive and creative perspectives.

She added, ”I was informed that the competition has been instr
umental in inspiring hundreds of children and adolescents to pursue creative writing over the years. It has helped them enhance their linguistic capabilities, nurturing their ability to express themselves and imagine, while also fostering their ongoing interest in literature and the habit of reading. Additionally, it has provided a platform for budding talents to venture into the publishing realm, with their books and stories now gracing library shelves.

Regarding the terms of the competition, the story must be in Arabic and based on the imagination and creativity of a writer between the ages of 6 and 18, with the possibility of adding drawings.

To submit a story, regardless of its size or number of words, it must be printed from the computer using the ‘Microsoft Word’ programme. The electronic form for the competition, available on the ‘Read, Dream, Create’ campaign website (www.readdreamcreate.ae), must be filled out, and the story must be attached to it. The deadline for submission is July 31, 2024. Plea
se note that the stories submitted must align with the inherent values of UAE society and human constants.

The Council has allocated valuable prizes for the winners, which will be distributed across two categories: the children’s category (aged 6-12 years) and the adolescents’ category (aged 13-18 years).

Each category will have one winner, each of whom will receive a prize consisting of AED 3,000, a set of valuable books and stories, and a certificate of appreciation. Furthermore, the winning stories will be featured on the Council’s website.
