ABU DHABI: The UAE will celebrate the “Emirati Women’s Day” on Wednesday to honour the remarkable achievements and contributions of Emirati women to the nation’s development.

The theme of this year’s Emirati Women’s Day, “We share for tomorrow”, follows the directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF). It reflects the UAE’s commitment to a participatory approach to progress, involving all segments of society in achieving its vision.

The UAE has made significant strides in gender equality, ranking seventh globally and first regionally in the Gender Inequality Index 2024, issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Emirati Women’s Day highlights the country’s advancements in women’s empowerment and emphasises the significance of continued development in this area.

Emirati Women’s Day annually
highlights the advanced strides made by the UAE in women’s empowerment, and enhances the honorable image of their achievements and successes in all fields.

Over the past few years, the UAE has implemented a package of laws and legislative amendments covering various aspects of women’s lives, including work, protection, political participation, and personal status. These reforms have enhanced women’s status and contributed to the UAE’s global competitiveness.

Two years ago, the UAE adopted the Gender Balance Strategy 2022-2026, which is based on a clear future vision aiming to make the UAE a global model for gender balance.

The strategy includes four pillars and main objectives: economic participation and entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, well-being and quality of life, protection, and global leadership and partnerships.

The goal is to transition from closing gender gaps and exploring best practices to positioning the country as an exporter of best gender balance practices, focusing on the post-global
competitiveness phase.

Thanks to its supportive legislative environment and national mechanisms, the UAE is a leading global model in protecting women’s rights. The General Women’s Union and the UAE Gender Balance Council have played crucial roles in empowering women and building their capacities in various fields.
