Cairo: Egypt’s Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir inspected the first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and visited the work sites for the second phase of the Greater Cairo Ring Road development project. El-Wazir confirmed that the BRT project’s first and second phases will see the operation of 100 electric buses on the ring road around Greater Cairo.
According to State Information Service Egypt, each bus has a capacity of 66 passengers, equivalent to five microbuses, allowing for the transportation of 3,200 passengers per hour in both directions. These buses are produced domestically as part of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s initiative to localize industries and minimize imports, aligning with the government’s plan to boost the industrial sector and establish Egypt as a regional hub.
The BRT buses will operate every three minutes, with 20 buses per hour, and frequency will increase to one every 1.5 minutes during peak hours. El-Wazir emphasized that the BRT project aims to serve as a modern example in state projects, highlighting its eco-friendly nature as a mass transport option.
