Tourism ministry announces launch of solar energy stations in several world heritage sites, museums

The Tourism and Antiquities Ministry announced on Tuesday 16/1/2024 the launch of solar energy stations in several world heritage sites and museums.

This came as part of a framework memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in 2022 to promote the use of solar power at the archaeological heritage sites and museums.

The MoU had been signed on the sidelines of the UN climate conference, COP27 in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh on 11 November 2022 between the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Moamen Othman, head of SCA’s museum department, said the project is part of the state’s efforts to maintain and preserve archeological sites.

A plan has been developed to change museums and archeological destinations into solar energy-based green sites under the Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) ‘Egypt Vision 2030′.

The MoU also includes the development of museums and archeological sites, the building of solar power stations and training for workers in these relevant
domains.

The stations have been established in Prince Mohamed Ali Palace (Al Manial Palace), the visitors’ area at the Pyramids of Giza complex, Alexandria National Museum (ANM) and Alexandria’s Royal Jewelry Museum.

More stations will be also established in other museums in the coming period, he added.

For her part, Doaa Salima, an official at the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Industrial Modernization Center (IMC), pointed out that such a project is carried out in cooperation between the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry, the IMC and the UNDP.
