ABU DHABI: Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, said that his country’s accession to the membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will be of paramount importance to supporting its economy.

In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of his participation in the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference held in Abu Dhabi, Marques noted to the announcement yesterday of the accession of his country and the Republic of the Comoros to the membership of the organisation as the first two new countries to join since 2016.

He underscored the importance of the conference in terms of the topics and issues it discusses, pointing out that joining the organisation will help the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste benefit from the experiences of member states in the field of trade.

He noted that this accession will contribute to supporting and developing the economy of Timor-Leste and engaging in the global trade movement,
which will have a positive impact on its economic development.

The Minister of Transport and Communications of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste praised the successful organisation of the conference by the United Arab Emirates, expressing his optimism on concluding the mesenterial with positive outcomes for the benefit of all member states.
