Gaza – Ma’an – The Independent Commission for Human Rights (the Board of Grievances) condemned the shooting incident that led to the death of citizen Islam Attia Awad Hijazi (Al-Faram), 31 years old, married and a mother of two children, who works as the program manager of the Heal Palestine Foundation in Gaza.

According to the Authority’s documentation, at approximately 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2024, while citizen Hijazi was driving the car of the institution she works for and while passing near the northern gate of the Jordanian field hospital in Khan Yunis, the car she was in was suddenly exposed to gunfire, which led to her immediate death and transfer to Nasser Medical Complex. It was found that she had been directly hit by four bullets, two in the head and two in the upper part of her body.

In its statement following the incident, the Ministry of Interior in the Gaza Strip explained that citizen Hijazi ‘was martyred in an accidental incident.’ According to her family’s statement, the police
informed them that the killing was carried out by mistake while the General Investigation Police were pursuing a fugitive from justice, who was driving a car with the same specifications as the car the deceased was driving, noting that the car she was driving clearly displayed the logo of the institution she worked for.

The Independent Commission views the killing of citizen Hijazi with great seriousness, especially since it comes in extremely complex circumstances in light of the ongoing war of extermination in the Gaza Strip.

The Independent Commission also warned of the extent of the danger threatening the rights and freedoms of Palestinians if the war of extermination and its repercussions continue, which affect internal security and stability and create a state of chaos and the absence of the rule of law, especially in light of the occupation’s systematic targeting of the law enforcement system. Accordingly, the Commission calls on the Ministry of Interior in the Gaza Strip to expedite the investigatio
n into the incident and publish the results of the investigation committee it formed following the incident to the public, and stresses the need to take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of this unfortunate incident and hold accountable those proven to be involved in this crime.
