The Ministry of Justice on Thursday concluded the EU-funded Support to the Rule of Law in Jordan program through the Access to Justice and Legal Empowerment in Jordan project and the Technical Assistance to Strengthen International Cooperation and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). The Access to Justice and Legal Empowerment in Jordan project, towards an effective and sustainable legal aid system, included many projects to reach the rule of law and access to justice to ensure that rights and freedoms for all are protected, Secretary General ofthe Ministry of Justice for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Kholoud Al Abbadi, said in the program closing ceremony, as a representative of the Minister of Justice. She added that the legal aid system in Jordan has been improved through the introduction of amendments to the legal aid system, which helped increase the number of people who can apply for legal aid, and improve the procedures in force. The closing ceremony of the program, which is implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), was attended by the Secretary-General of the Judicial Council, Judge Ali Al-Msaimi, Spain’s ambassador to Jordan, Miguel de Lucas, EU Director of Cooperation, UNODC Regional Representative, Public Security Department (PSD) representatives and the Bar Council of Spain, representatives of the Jordanian Bar Association, General Statistics Department, the National Center for Human Rights, and partners.
