RAMALLAH: La Unipau (Universitat Internacional de la Pau) will dedicate its annual Day for Nonviolence activity to slain Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by the Israeli army while she was covering a military incursion in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
Abu Akleh was clearly identified as a journalist as she was wearing the press vest and, despite this, the Israeli army shot her. Her colleague said that that the first shot missed them, the second shot hit him and the third shot killed Abu Akleh.
La Unipau said in a statement posted on its official website that “attacks on journalists are attacks on freedom of information and are planned tactics to hide the reality of what is happening.”
Shireen Abu Akleh was one of the leading journalists in the Arab world and was one of the first correspondents to report from Palestine for Al Jazeera.
The event will be held on January 28 in the Rambla del Celler at 12:00PM.
A manifesto in dedication to Abu Akleh will be read, accord
ing to the official website of La Unipau.
