President Abdel Fattah directed the government to work for improving livestock breeds by promoting the culture artificial insemination, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation El Sayed el Quseir said Sunday.
The minister made the remarks during an inspection tour of an artificial insemination center in Alexandria’s industrial district of Al-Amiriyyah, accompanied by Deputy Agriculture Minister for Livestock, Fish, and Pourtly Mostafa al-Sayad.
As part of the ministry’s plan to ramp up its livestock genetic improvement efforts, the center’s productivity had been improved by adding 51 new compartments for bulls used for artificial insemination to boost the center’s capacity, the minister noted.
The president also instructed the government to build more artificial insemination centers nationwide to cover local needs, Quseir pointed out.
He also touched upon the center’s efforts to provide artificial insemination training to local livestock breeders and young farmers, supplying them with necessary tools and equipment free of charge.
The center also provides these trainees with frozen semen doses, liquid nitrogen, and other required supplies at a low price, to promote the artificial insemination practice in Egyptian villages, Quseir added.
The center is part of the Sustainable Agriculture Investments and Livelihoods Project (SAILP), designed to enable smallholder farmers to increase their incomes and profitability, and diversify their livelihoods.
The project aims to strengthen smallholder institutions, improve agricultural production and marketing, and build capacities for employment and enterprise development.
