Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s firm strategic position toward the crisis in Syria in line with UNSC resolution 2254.
It is necessary to attain progress in the political process and alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, he added during his meeting Thursday 1/12/2022 with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen, on the sidelines of their participation in Rome MED – Mediterranean Dialogues.
At the beginning of the meeting, the UN official congratulated Egypt over the outstanding success of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The two sides discussed the latest developments in Syria, added the spokesman, noting that Pedersen briefed Shoukry on the outcome of his talks with the various Syrian parties in order to advance the course of the political process in the country.
The spokesman further said that the pair discussed the latest regional and international developments.
They also underlined the importance of preserving the Syrian sovereignty in order to spare the region more factors of instability, according to the spokesman.
An agreement was reached to continue consultations on ways of supporting the political solution for the Syrian crisis, added the spokesman.
