Rabat – HM King Mohammed VI’s speech to the parliament on the occasion of the opening of the 1st session of the 4th legislative year of the 11th legislature highlights the innovative international momentum surrounding the Moroccan Sahara issue, stressed Khalid Chegraoui, Vice-Dean of Political Science and International Relations at the Faculty of Governance, Economic and Social Sciences (FGSES) of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).

Under the impetus of HM the King, Morocco has initiated an innovative international dynamic around the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, noted Chegraoui in a statement to MAP, noting that this approach encompasses political, social, economic and cultural dimensions, thus consolidating the Sahara as a strategic bridge between Morocco and Africa.

In this sense, he indicated that major continental projects, such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline and the Royal Initiative enabling Atlantic access for Sahel countries, illustrate this proactive vision, anchored in an integrat
ed approach for the African continent.

“Guided by a firm and dynamic approach, the Kingdom’s policy confirms the legitimacy of its historic position on the Moroccan Sahara,’ asserted Chegraoui, explaining that this strategy is producing concrete results: 85% of UN member states do not recognize the separatist entity, and more than 112 countries support the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty. In Europe, support has grown, with 28 countries and one major regional organization opening consulates in Laayun and Dakhla.

On this issue, he noted that France, in particular, consistently supports Moroccan sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, regarding the autonomy initiative as the only viable solution, a position shared by other powers, including the United States and Spain. In the same vein, he added that Morocco continues to mobilize its diplomatic efforts, at official, parliamentary and partisan levels, to convince countries that are still reluctant.

Chegraoui also indicated that His Majesty the Kin
g had reminded parliamentarians, as well as all Moroccan citizens and institutions, to remain mobilized and to pursue efforts to defend the Moroccan position with coordination and responsibility. ‘Morocco is guided by this prism in its international relations and its vision of national integrity.’
