Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad said the “Ride To COP27” is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the world to utilize electric motorsport to serve environmental goals.
Fouad made the remarks on the occasion of the start of a journey on motorbike by Egyptian motorcyclist, adventurer and climate activist Ali Abdo, as part of the “Ride To COP27” initiative for raising climate awareness, which is sponsored by the ministries of environment, youth and sports, planning and economic development, and military production.
The initiative was launched in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the USAID-funded Sustainable Services Activity (SSA).
In a statement on Tuesday 11/10/2022, Foaud highlighted her ministry’s commitment to engaging young people in environmental action.
She also asserted President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s keenness on making use of their contributions to the global climate summit Egypt will host next month, to share their views and proposals for combating climate change.
The 30-day journey started from the town of Abu Simbel in the southernmost governorate of Aswan, and will end in the iconic Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh, making it the longest journey on motorbike in the world.
It is meant to set a new record in the Guinness World Records.
In 2019, UNDP partnered with Abdo, World Records holder, on another journey: World’s Longest Journey on Electric Motorcycle.
In his World Record attempt, Abdo toured Egypt on a journey that covered 25,000 km, visiting 75 Egyptian cities, and capturing 150 locations.
The collaboration aimed to raise awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly environment protection as well as mitigation of and adaptation to climate change.
