Rafah Crossing to Be Operational Soon: FM

Cairo: The Rafah border crossing will be operational soon once the necessary preparations are completed on the Palestinian side, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Badr Abdelatty in an interview with Al Qahera News channel on Monday. Abdelatty emphasized the establishment of a Palestinian state as the sole guarantee for the security and stability of Israel and the surrounding region.

According to State Information Service Egypt, besides the ongoing calm, ceasefire, and the exchange of prisoners, hostages, and detainees, another critical aspect is progressing well: humanitarian and medical aid. The aid is being delivered at an accelerated pace, surpassing the agreed-upon target by 600 trucks per day. Egypt is facilitating this effort by allowing aid to enter through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, with plans to operationalize the Rafah crossing once necessary preparations are complete.

Abdelatty noted that while Egypt is fully ready, significant damage caused by the Israeli side to facilities on the Palestinian side of the crossing remains a challenge. Observers from the European Union will be present to oversee the operations. He reiterated Egypt’s solidarity with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, emphasizing the country’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire and urging the international community to support the Palestinian cause.

The Foreign Minister highlighted that the port and airport of Arish are open to aircraft carrying medical and humanitarian aid for Gaza. Recent visits by the Minister of Health and the Minister of Social Solidarity to the Rafah crossing were to assess readiness. Abdelatty praised the Egyptian Red Crescent for its role and affirmed the government’s continued support for the Palestinian people.

Abdelatty condemned the use of starvation as collective punishment, pointing out the severe impact on humanitarian needs, especially shortages of electricity and water, and the destruction of infrastructure. He stressed Egypt’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza.
