Prisoners Authority: Abuse of prisoners and emptying of Section 24 in Ofer Prison


Ramallah – Ma’an – The lawyer of the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission was able to visit a number of prisoners in Ofer prison at the end of last week. He visited prisoner Khalil Qandil (28 years old) from Jalazone camp in Ramallah who is still detained, in addition to three prisoners from Bethlehem: Fori Salma (24 years old) from Al-Azza camp, administrative detainee; Fadi Shehadeh (21 years old) from Deheishe camp, administrative detainee; and Baha’ al-Din Arouj (17 years old) from Janata town, administrative detainee, who was supposed to take the last high school exams.

The Commission’s lawyer explained, according to what he documented from his visit to the prisoners in prison, that Section 24 had been completely emptied, and that there had been extensive transfers of administrative prisoners to other prisons, and that the transfers were still ongoing. They also indicated that they had been subjected to beatings and abuse several times, and some of them had been assaulted while going out to visit the lawyer, a
nd they were all suffering from significant weight loss as a result of the starvation policy.

Regarding the general conditions, the Commission’s lawyer explained that they are still difficult and complicated, as the prisoners are being fought with water, which is only available to them for ’45’ minutes a day, and the electricity is cut off at 10 p.m. until noon the next day, and the food is poor in quantity and quality, in addition to the set of punishments that have been imposed on them since October 7, and nothing has changed except that they are worse than they started with.
