Cairo: Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, received Mr. Doug Herrington, the CEO of global Amazon stores, and the accompanying delegation this evening at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The meeting was attended by Engineer Hassan Khatib, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Mr. Hossam Heiba, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, and Major General Essam El-Naggar, Head of the General Authority for Export and Import Control, to explore opportunities for expansion in the Egyptian market and enhance cooperation in the field of digital commerce.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Prime Minister welcomed the CEO of global Amazon stores during his current visit to Egypt, expressing his appreciation for Amazon’s role in supporting digital commerce. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly also expressed his eagerness to support Amazon’s efforts and investments in Egypt, noting his previous visit to one of the company’s premises in Egypt.
Mr. Doug Herrington, the CEO of global Amazon stores, expressed his appreciation for the ongoing support from the Egyptian government to Amazon’s operations in Egypt, highlighting significant milestones in this collaboration, including the opening of the fulfilment centre in the 10th of Ramadan City and the launch of the largest customer service centre in the region. He stated, “At Amazon, we believe that Egypt represents a strategic market with tremendous potential. We are committed to investing in infrastructure and creating job opportunities, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with the Egyptian government to support digital transformation and economic growth.”
The CEO added, “We are working to empower thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises to grow through our digital platform, and we hope to continue working with the government to facilitate procedures and encourage more local businesses to join the digital economy.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Investment expressed his appreciation for the company’s investments in Egypt, highlighting the advantages Egypt offers, particularly in terms of skilled young talent that can support the company’s operations and the services it provides digitally. Engineer Hassan Khatib also affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting digital commerce, indicating that the Ministry of Investment intends to study all proposals from the company to support its investments in Egypt and enhance the field of digital commerce.
The minister explained that cooperation with the company could also contribute to achieving financial inclusion by encouraging more businesses and individuals to engage in digital commerce. The Prime Minister confirmed that the government is keen to enhance cooperation with the company, especially since digital commerce will promote financial inclusion.
Mr. Hossam Heiba presented Egypt’s experiences in the field of digital commerce and what could be achieved through cooperation with Amazon in this regard. During the meeting, the Amazon delegation reviewed the company’s key achievements in Egypt, including progress made in employment, investment, and logistics infrastructure, as well as future expansion plans aimed at deepening the company’s presence and enhancing Egypt’s role as a regional hub for digital commerce. Amazon officials confirmed their readiness to support the integration of small and medium traditional stores into the digital economy.
Both sides affirmed the importance of continued joint coordination and the exchange of expertise to ensure the achievement of desired developmental and economic goals. Mr. Herrington also expressed his hope for the continuation of this fruitful partnership between Amazon and the Egyptian government in the coming phase.
At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister confirmed the Egyptian government’s continued support for Amazon’s presence in the Egyptian market and its readiness to discuss any proposals to increase the company’s investments in Egypt.
