President Abbas meets with Indian Prime Minister in New York

NEW YORK: President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas met at dawn on Monday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of his participation in the meetings of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister of India, President Abbas reviewed the friendly and cooperative relations that bind the two countries and peoples, highly appreciating India’s positions in support of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people based on international law, and appreciating what India provides in terms of humanitarian and economic support, education and training of Palestinian cadres in various fields.

The State of Palestine’s wish to obtain membership in the BRICS group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was also discussed, as the President of the State of Palestine will participate in the upcoming BRICS summit meetings in Russia at the end of October.

The Indian Prime Minister was also briefed on the latest developments in th
e Palestinian region, the need to work towards a ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the State of Palestine assuming its jurisdiction in the Gaza Strip, and then proceeding to implement the General Assembly resolution regarding the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice and holding an international peace conference, which would lead to achieving peace by ending the Israeli occupation, embodying the Palestinian state on the ground with East Jerusalem as its capital, and achieving security, stability and peace for all.

President Abbas stressed that the State of Palestine will continue to seek full membership in the United Nations and obtain more recognition of the State of Palestine.

The President appreciated the support provided by India to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stressing the need for continued support to enable it to implement its programs and basic services, including education, health care, relief and social
services for refugees, especially in the Gaza Strip.
