PM warns of crackdown on overpricing sellers, commodity stashers

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said the government will not tolerate any incidents of hiding commodities, overpricing, speculation, or monopoly, warning that violators will face strict legal action.

Madbouli was speaking during the 40th meeting of the Board of Governors on Saturday, in the presence of Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali el Moselhi, and Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna.

The governors of Giza, New Valley, Cairo, Damietta, Qena, Dakahlia attended in person, while other governors participated via videoconferencing.

Madbouli emphasized the need for maintaining adequate application of all monitoring mechanisms in place for effective market control, noting that the government is fully coordinating with the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC) and the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FIE) to ensure product availability and adequate market control.

In addition, the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has been instructed to receive citizens’ complaints via the hotline: (19088), the prime minister said, warning that strict legal measures will be taken against whomsoever tries to take unfair advantage of ongoing circumstances.

Pursuant to the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the government will also work for supplying markets and outlets with as much of commodities as possible, in coordination with all governorates, the ministry of supply, the Armed Forces, and other relevant bodies, Madbouli said.

Moreover, the Cabinet’s IDSC Crisis Management Room will be monitoring markets around the clock to ensure product availability and market stability, in tandem with field visits by cabinet-affiliated committees, the prime minister added.
