PM Shtayyeh, British FM discuss Israeli aggression against Jenin

Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh and British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly discussed today the Israeli aggression against Jenin and its camp. During a phone conversation, Shtayyeh affirmed the Israeli military invasion of the Jenin refugee camp should be condemned, adding that the offensive resulted in the destruction of the camp’s infrastructure, facilities and homes, and the killing, arrest and displacement of innocent people. Commenting on the recent statement of the British Prime Minister, Shtayyeh said that the Palestinian people are the ones who have the right to self-defense, adding that ‘the occupying and aggressor party” does not have this right. On the other hand, the Prime Minister demanded a serious British position against the occupation and settlement, urging for taking actions instead of making statements. Shtayyeh also said that the absence of a political horizon, in addition to Israeli measures, are igniting the situation on the ground. “Israel, in the presence of an extremist government that pushes for more settlements and incitement against our people, imposes a deteriorating fait accompli at the expense of the Palestinian state,’ the Prime Minister affirmed. He stressed that this is an existential threat to the Palestinian national project and the existence of the Palestinian people on their land. For his part, the British minister affirmed his country’s position rejecting Israeli settlements, supporting the two-state solution, and working with all parties to achieve peace in the region.
