Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said on Saturday 08/01/2022 that the government takes steps to restructure Egypt’s subsidy system to ensure that it targets the deserved citizens in light of the increase in population.
Madbouli’s remarks came during his meeting with Supply Minister Ali Moselhi and Social Solidarity Minister Nevin Al Qabbaj to follow up procedures of restructuring the subsidy system, the Cabinet’s spokesman Nader Saad said.
Madbouli pointed out that the government started in discussing a number of suggestions regarding the restructuring process, noting a committee had been formed with the membership of the Ministries of Supply, Planning, Trade and Industry, Finance, Local Development, ICT, and Interior as well as concerned bodies.
The committee is tasked with setting criteria for those who are eligible for the subsidies, and outlining implementation mechanisms for purifying the current system of ineligible families, the premier underlined.
From the fiscal year of 2013/14 to 2021/22, the total value of the subsidy, grants, and social benefits increased from EGP 228 billion to EGP 321 billion with an increase of 30%.
The meeting touched on setting up a database for all the beneficiaries of the subsidy system and increasing the number of Takafol w Karama’s beneficiaries.
