Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly convened a high-level meeting on Sunday to assess the progress of land allocations for new renewable energy initiatives, with a particular focus on green hydrogen. Key ministers and officials participated in the discussions.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat provided an update on the capacity and locations of green hydrogen projects. He detailed the sites that have been allocated for feasibility studies and those earmarked for collaboration with the Ministry of Transport.
The review also covered the documentation of green hydrogen agreements and a roadmap for implementing various renewable energy projects. So far, Egypt has signed eight memoranda of understanding and 15 framework agreements with 23 companies and consortia.
Minister Esmat also outlined preparations for summer 2025, including ensuring sufficient fuel and natural gas supplies for power plants. He highlighted the expected role of new renewable energy facilities in reducing fuel consumption.
The meeting further examined potential locations for renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across multiple governorates. The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) has received numerous investment requests, including a proposal for a green ammonia production facility in Port Said, powered by 5.5 GW of green electricity.
Additionally, two projects in East Port Said were proposed to produce green hydrogen, ammonia, potassium chloride, and caustic soda, utilising 13 GW of renewable energy generated from wind and solar power.
Egypt’s push for renewable energy and green hydrogen aligns with its broader strategy to position itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy production.
