The government’s efforts to make the utmost use agricultural drainage water is part of the State’s plan for water resource conservation, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli said.
Madbouli made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday to discuss the irrigation ministry’s plans and proposals for re-using up to three billion cubic meters of agricultural drainage water, usually discharged into the sea or lakes.
If successfully re-used, after studying potential environmental impacts, this amount would save around two billion cubic meters of water each year.
Meanwhile, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aati briefed the premier on available and remaining amounts of drainage water after completing a number of projects under way the eastern, central and western regions of the Nile Delta.
He said that the proper utilization of these amounts requires the establishment of desalination plants and coordination with the ministry of environment to assess potential environmental impacts and determine the most effective utilization methods.
