PM reviews efforts to apply modern irrigation systems, implement canal lining project

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli stressed the necessity of intensifying efforts to implement the national canal upgrading and lining project and apply modern irrigation systems.

This came during a meeting on Monday with Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Aati to review progress made so far to implement Egypt’s canal lining project and the shift to modern irrigation methods.

During the meeting, the premier stressed the great importance of this vital project carried out by the State nationwide in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to rationalize the consumption of water used to irrigate agricultural and reclaimed lands and secure new jobs for youth.

For his part, the irrigation minister said that the national canal lining project helps ensure fair water distribution among farmers.

As for progress made in implementing the project which aims at rehabilitating and lining 20,000 km of irrigation canals, the minister said that 4,150 km of these canals have been lined and rehabilitated so far.

He further noted that the daily rate of rehabilitating the canals has reached 15 km.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed preparations related to UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27), to be hosted by Egypt in November.
