PM: Egypt’ political will upholds commitment to confronting illegal migration

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli Thursday 10/10/2024 said migration is a global phenomenon contributing to the shaping of diversified societies, yet, illegal migration, which is often conducted through hazardous means and under harsh conditions, casts a shadow over individuals and nations, with serious negative impacts at all economic, social and security levels.

Madbouli, in a video message screened at the inauguration ceremony of the fourth National Action Plan for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration (2024-2026) which is taking place at the New Administrative Capital, said that the event underscores the government’s resolute to combat a challenge that transcends borders and affects all countries.

The state has made significant proactive steps for combating irregular migration through the establishment of a national coordinating committee that developed a comprehensive vision and effective programs aimed at uprooting the illegal migration phenomenon and addressing its root causes, the premier said.

He added that the launch of the fourth plan of action crowns Egypt’s ongoing commitment to ensuring security and stability of its people.

The key pillars of the plan are tailored to combat factors behind the illegal migration, the premier said, adding that these pillars include prevention, protection and reintegration, governance, and regional and international cooperation.

The National Strategy for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration (2016-2026) aims to protect the groups at risk of exploitation by smugglers, who are young people, children, their families, women and illegal migrants coming Egypt.

It also aims to prevent and punish brokers and traders of illegal migration through strict measures and sanctions and to build and strengthen the capabilities of governmental agencies involved in implementing the strategy such as law enforcement agencies, educational, religious, media and national councils, as well as the civil society.

The Strategy confirms Egypt’s obligations under international, region
al and national priorities.

It is an integral part of IOM country strategy which provides the framework for cooperation with the Government of Egypt in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through which migration has been mainstreamed, including target 10.7 on good migration governance, as well as Egypt’s own Sustainable Development Strategy as providing alternatives to irregular migration is central to the new Strategy and Action Plan.
