Alexandria: Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli on Thursday inaugurated a ceremony marking the “World Cities Day 2024” at Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria governorate, in the presence of a galaxy of ministers. The ceremony, celebrating World Cities Day, is under the theme of Youth Leading Climate and Local Action for Cities.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the ceremony began with a short film about Alexandria governorate titled “A Tale of a City,” which demonstrated the cultural and civil diversity of the Mediterranean city. Alexandria was the first to formulate the concept of urbanization and modernization, tracing back to the era of Macedonia King Alexander the Great and extending to Modern Egypt.
The film highlighted the city’s enduring legacy over more than 23 centuries, especially as it hosts the World Cities Day amidst climate change challenges such as increased rain frequencies, high waves, and rising sea levels. It showcased mega projects initiated by the state to address these pres
sing issues, including a comprehensive strategy to manage rainwater and 11 additional projects aimed at protecting the shores from erosion.
Efforts to improve living conditions in Alexandria were also featured, with initiatives to eliminate slums and establish new residential areas. The project “Masharef City,” described as the largest new urban project in Alexandria, was highlighted as a significant development.
Ahmed Zayed, Director of Bibliotheca Alexandrina, emphasized Egypt’s efforts to tackle urban challenges through scientific methods and well-planned strategies, earning international acclaim for its approach. He described Alexandria as an iconic Mediterranean city that promotes Egyptian culture, rooted in love and peace, underscoring development and building over war and conflicts.
Zayed further noted that the theme of World Cities Day, focusing on youth leadership in climate and local action, aligns with Egypt’s development priorities, including climate action, youth engagement, local initiatives,
and urban sustainability.
