ABU DHABI: The oil industry supports 70 million jobs worldwide, according to OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais.
He highlighted the significant role of the oil and gas sector in employment and its contribution to national economies globally.
‘Jobs in this industry span not only high-skilled positions but also extend across the entire supply chain, including manufacturing, transportation, hospitality, and retail,” Al Ghais noted.
He pointed out that according to the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s Net Zero Roadmap 2023, IEA expects the fossil fuel industry to lose 13 million jobs between 2022 and 2030, at a rate of around 1.6 million jobs yearly or 4,500 daily.
Al-Ghais emphasised that OPEC’s message is clear and unwavering regarding employment in the oil industry, ‘the world needs more of them’.
Anticipating a rise in oil demand to 116 million barrels per day by 2045, he emphasised the necessity for additional workers even as the industry embraces emissions-reduction technologies.
