Ohood Al Roumi leads UAE delegation in historic UN Summit of The Future

NEW YORK: Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Government Development and The Future, led the UAE delegation at the Summit of the Future during the 79th UN General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York from September 22nd-23rd, 2024. Through its participation in the historic Summit, the UAE emphasised the importance of building bridges and strengthening multilateralism to address global challenges and build a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future for the planet and future generations.

Ohood Al Roumi delivered the UAE’s statement during the plenary of the Summit on 23rd September. During the Summit, she called on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to multilateral cooperation; emphasised the UAE’s belief in working towards a future that safely leverages emerging technologies; and encouraged global leaders to meet the challenge of safeguarding the world for the next generation.

‘The situation demands that we come together, agree and commit to concrete solutions, prepare for
emerging challenges, while reaffirming the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of multilateralism,’ said Al Roumi.

During the Summit, UN member states adopted the Pact for the Future, as well as two annexes: a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

In the lead-up to the Summit, the UAE pragmatically engaged to shape these important outcome documents. These priorities include: addressing climate change, including the ‘UAE Consensus’; promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence, and combating hate speech; advancing technology and education; protecting and promoting culture; and supporting the youth, peace and security and women, peace, and security agendas.

The UAE will continue to be an active and constructive partner in the multilateral system, committed to strengthening collaborative efforts that address today’s challenges and create effective solutions for a better tomorrow.
