Official media wins Birzeit University’s first Shireen Abu Akleh award

The official Palestinian media today won the Shireen Abu Akleh Award for Outstanding Achievements in Media in its first edition of each of the following categories; audio and visual media, which was launched by Birzeit University. The award was established in honor of renowned Al Jazeera’s Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was murdered in cold blood by the Israeli occupation forces during a military incursion into Jenin on May 11 of last year. A specialized committee selected the award winners. The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) won the multimedia category, where 17 candidates competed, by submitting three visual press reports that dealt with settlement issues, local elections, and land grabs by the Israeli occupation. The reports were prepared by journalist Duha Humaidan. The Voice of Palestine Radio also won the award for audio media category, where seven candidates competed. Nisreen Awwad, a reporter and TV/Radio show presenter at Voice of Palestine Radio, won the award. Basma al-Kurd and Rasha Abu Jalal, from the Gaza Strip, also won an award in the digital media category. Eighteen candidates competed for the award. Birzeit university previously announced that a ceremony will be held on May 11, 2023, to memorialize the first anniversary of the assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh. The ceremony took place on campus in the presence of journalists, academics and concerned parties.
