Number of Palestinian detainees who died in Israeli custody has reached 40 since start of Israeli genocide in Gaza- PPS

Ramallah: The Director of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), Abdullah al-Zghari, said that one year after the onset of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the number of Palestinian detainees who died in Israeli custody has reached 40.

This toll includes 14 detainees from the West Bank and Jerusalem, two from the 1948-occupied land and 24 from Gaza. He noted that the total number of identified prisoners and detainees who died in Israeli custody since 1967 now stands at 277.

During a press conference held at the municipality of Al-Bireh in Ramallah, Zghari announced the names of 15 detainees from Gaza who died in Israeli custody and whose identities had not been previously disclosed. He confirmed that the Israeli army reported that these individuals had died in its jails and detention camps after October 7, 2023.

He stated that the reported number of Gaza’s detainees who died in Israeli custody is not conclusive, estimating that the total could be in the dozens, according to reports published by Israeli med
ia and human rights organizations.

He added that the reported number of Palestinian detainees who died in Israeli detention centers due to the retaliatory war launched by Israel against prisoners includes only those whose names have been identified and confirmed by prisoner organizations.

He expected that there are likely dozens more who have been killed in cold blood in Israeli prisons, with their fates unknown due to Israel’s policy of enforced disappearance, all occurring without any international intervention.

Since October 7, 2023, the number of detentions conducted by Israeli forces has surpassed 11,100 in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

The number of detentions among women has exceeded 420, including those detained in the 1948-occupied land and several female detainees from Gaza.

The number of detentions among children in the West Bank and Jerusalem has reached at least 740.

Additionally, 108 journalists have been detained, of whom 58 remain in custody, including six female journalists. Rasha Hirzal
lah, a reporter working for Palestinian News and Information Agency WAFA is among the female detainees who remain in custody.

The number of administrative detention orders issued since the beginning of the genocide has exceeded 9,000, including both new and renewed orders.

As of the beginning of this month, the total number of detainees in Israeli jails has exceeded 10,100, including 95 females and 270 children, while the number of administrative detainees has reached 3,398.

The number of detainees from Gaza who were classified by the Israeli prison authorities as “unlawful combatants” stands at 1,618. It is important to note that this figure does not encompass all detainees from Gaza, particularly those held in military camps.
