DOHA: A delegation from the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), headed by Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, participated in the Regional Dialogue Forum on Human Rights: Promoting Equality and Combating Discrimination in the Context of Migration, held in the Qatari capital, Doha. The forum was organised by the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar, in cooperation with the UN Human Rights Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) over two days, from 15th to 16th July, 2024.

The NHRI participated in a session on showcasing best practices and experiences of National Human Rights Institutions. During the session, Maqsoud Kruse, presented the Institution’s experience, particularly in its establishment phase, gaining expertise and learning about the best human rights practices at the regional and international levels through mutual visits with National Human Rights Institutions, training workshops, and retreats w
ith relevant government and international agencies and organisations. This has led to the development of strategic directives for key files such as workers, women and children, persons with disabilities, and health and mental health. He also highlighted the UAE’s leading efforts in promoting equality and combating discrimination in all its forms at the legislative, legal, institutional, and programmatic levels.

The forum, attended by Gulf human rights bodies and committees along with international experts from the United Nations Human Rights Commission and related organisations, featured numerous sessions discussing mechanisms to combat racial discrimination. These sessions included discussions on the legal frameworks for migration in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the working and living conditions of workers. On the sidelines of the forum, Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar, welcomed Maqsoud Kruse and his accompanying delegation to discuss mutual cooperation and coordination on human rights issues. Additionally, Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, Secretary-General of the ANNHRI, welcomed Maqsoud Kruse and his delegation to explore areas of joint cooperation.

The NHRI’s delegation included Mohamed Al Hammadi, Member of the Board of Trustees, Amro Al Qahtani, Manager of the Chairperson’s Office, Fajer Al Haidan, Head of the International Affairs Section, and Abdulaziz Al Obathani, Head of International and Regional Organisations.
