President of the National Council for Women (NCW) Maya Morsi said Egypt made significant progress in empowering women and achieving gender equality in recent years, thanks to the political leadership’s strong support for women rights.
Morsi’s remarks came during her meeting with the member states’ ambassadors of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), on the sidelines of her participation in 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, according to a statement released by the NCW on Friday 11/03/2022.
The NCW head added that Egypt was the world’s first country to launch the 2030 National Strategy for Women Empowerment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
She noted this strategy is considered as a roadmap for the Egyptian government to implement all programs and activities aimed at empowering women, the statement read.
Morsi went on to say that Egypt recently initiated the National Strategy for Human Rights, which contains a main axis of women rights.
She also reviewed Egypt’s efforts in terms of protecting and backing women amid the coronavirus crisis.
The 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which runs from March 9 to 25, focused on achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programs.
