Morocco’s Prison Delegation Refutes Allegations of Excesses at a Local Prison in Meknes

Rabat – The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation (DGAPR) has refuted the allegations posted on a website about ‘excesses against inmates in the isolation ward at the Toulal 2 local prison in Meknes,’ ‘blackmail by officials against drug barons in return for sums of money’ and ‘behavior consisting of putting prisoners at the service of the said barons’.

Immediately informed, the DGAPR dispatched a commission of inquiry to carry out the necessary investigations in order to establish the veracity of these allegations regarding the physical integrity of a group of detainees, according to a press release published on Monday by the Delegation.

Investigations have revealed that the ‘allegations published are pure slander aimed at putting pressure on officials working in the penal institution, in particular the head of the security and discipline department, to prevent them from carrying out their duties with the required rigor in accordance with the legal and regulatory provisions govern
ing prisons,’ states the press release.

As for allegations of prisoners being exploited for the benefit of drug barons, the DGAPR stresses that ‘they are totally unfounded, in that these inmates carry out their duties under the supervision of prison officials, given the fact that they have been selected from among prisoners demonstrating good conduct’.

Being open to public opinion and media, the DGAPR is constantly confronted with false information and allegations published about penal institutions both via the various media outlets and social networks, underlines the same source, noting that given the danger of the allegations disseminated, the DGAPR has decided to take legal action against the concerned website.
