Mexico City – France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara reinforces efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, stated Mexican international relations expert Pedro Diaz de la Vega.
He told MAP that this position reflects the strategic nature of relations between Morocco and France, noting that for France and the European Union, the Kingdom stands out as an “essential partner” in the collective effort to promote peace and development.
This is also a milestone decision in the history of relations between the two countries, he said, adding that France’s support as a permanent member of the UN Security Council is of paramount importance, confirming Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The international relations expert also pointed out that this decision comes at a time when the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the autonomy plan put forward by the Kingdom to bring this regional dispute to a definitive close are enjoying growing support from the international community.
In
a message to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the French President officially informed the Sovereign that ‘the present and future of the Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,’ according to a statement from the Royal Office.
The French President also reaffirms to HM the King ‘the unwavering position of France on this issue of national security for the Kingdom’ and asserts that his country ‘intends to act in alignment with this position both nationally and internationally.’
